I notice so many of the people I encounter refer to their mates as their "friend". I remember a former pastor laughing about that and asking what it means?
What is up with these undefined relationships? Whatever happened to "boyfriend", which shows a relationship? What happened to "girlfriend" which shows exclusivity? What about "significant other"?
Why do so many people accept undefined titles? I'll start by giving my 2 cents worth.
I am too old for undefined titles. Either you are "my man" leading to marriage or you are to exit Stage Left. Am I wrong in feeling this way?

;D ;D ;D Exit Stage Left? That's funny. But I agree with you. You are right, for sure. When I was younger I fought commitment and now I feel like you do. Time to get serious.

Agreed! Either he wants me or he doesn't. If he is proud, he will announce I'm his lady. otherwise, I agree. Get Gone!

I notice so many of the people I encounter refer to their mates as their "friend". I remember a former pastor laughing about that and asking what it means? On this bulletin board, I use the term "friend" because I don't want to post his name on the bulletin board. Friend means just that - friend. He is my friend, as well as my man. For me, my relationship with him is defined. We know that we are seeing each other exclusively because we are being prayerfull to see if this relationship will lead to marraige. If we realize that we are not compatible then yes, it will end. I honestly don't know why I don't use the term "boyfriend". When I am around my friends, I may say "my man" but most times I will say his name and they will know exactly who I am talking about. "Signifcant Other" reminds me of a married couple but that is only due to the fact that everyone that I know that uses that phrase, is married. dunno.....I honestly just use it on the board. No, I don't believe you are wrong to feel this way. As Christians, is there any other choice?

Yeah, I like the title "My lady". It sounds good and lets the bros know to back off. I don't like to use friend because it's not possessive enough and to me, when my boys use that, it's about someone they are not serious about. I agree that the goal at this stage is to call the person "my fiancee".
BTW, "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" sounds really, really young so maybe that's why many don't use that. Teenagers and people in their early 20s use that term. I don't like it. But that's me.

I agree, when I hear it I think about my times in highschool and before. However, if somone asks me do I have a boyfriend, I do say yes!

Sister Wizdom,
I think people use the term friend because they don't know what else to call the person. Someone else pointed out that girlfriend and boyfriend sounds juvenile, which I agree with. So that may be why people use "friend."

Sister Wizdom, I think people use the term friend because they don't know what else to call the person. Especially on a message board!
